This blog was set up with the vague idea of posting bits and pieces, shards of information about life and language in Ireland.
Time never seemed to be enough, so this is the first post ever to see the light of day here.
Only when I visit English speaking countries do I become aware of the fact that being Irish carries a certain cachet that I am not always able to understand.
I have met people in Australia who know more about Saint Patrick than I do. When one lives in a culture and in a veritable bath of language flow, one does not usually take time to make a fuss about nuances and discuss icons and totemic figures.
